Cyber Chanting

In Asia, many people who practice Buddhism engage in the chanting of scriptures, a tradition that reflects both our cultural heritage and our faith. It is widely recognized that chanting plays a crucial role in spiritual enlightenment and even promotes health. For nearly two decades, I have been passionate about listening to Buddhist chants and songs. Recently, after experiencing the “Rebirth Mantra” in the game “Black Myth: Wukong,” I developed a particular fondness for this innovative approach to chanting. This experience opened my eyes to the idea that chanting can be vibrant and engaging rather than dull and antiquated.

In collaboration with Wuhan University, I have translated foundational Buddhist concepts, which has deepened my understanding of this remarkable faith. As a result, I am inspired to design a game that allows players to chant scriptures in a virtual reality (VR) environment. This game would enable players not only to learn the proper techniques of chanting but also to meditate and enjoy a fulfilling experience.

In this game, you will find yourself inside a cave, facing a giant Bodhisattva, with a person carrying a gourd standing nearby. As you approach the table, you will notice a spoon. When you pick up the spoon and strike the gong next to you, the person with the gourd will sit down, and the “Rebirth Mantra” will begin to play. Simultaneously, the trees and plants around will sway in rhythm with the chant. If you hit the gong again with the spoon, the “Rebirth Mantra” will stop, and the person carrying the gourd will stand up.

This game is just a preliminary design. In the next phase, I plan to incorporate scripture texts, translations, and introductions, as well as the original Sanskrit pronunciations. Additionally, I will introduce a feature that allows players to tap along with the rhythm of the chant.
